The content of The Backstory is a work of fiction. The collage-style artwork, created using encaustic painting materials and paper ephemera, is my own.
Normally, when stories and artwork are shown together, the story is written first. The illustration is created later and it pertains to a single scene in the narrative. In this case, the story is written second. It’s more of a backstory, created after the artwork is completed.
I’m intensely interested in inventions, inventors, and especially in the creative process. In some cases, in the backgrounds, I’ve will be using articles and engravings from 150-year-old editions of “Scientific American,” among other publications, because I am fascinated with the idea that everything in the modern world reveals the hand of its creator, if you look hard enough at it and let your imagination fly. (That’s not “creator” with a capital “c,” which would be an entirely different project and not one I am prepared to take on.)
I will be adding to this collection each month throughout 2017.
