30 x 40" Original encaustic collage.
About once a year I move away from my normal style using vintage photographic portraits and instead, attempt to recreate a famous work of art using encaustic wax and paper. I have learned so much by doing this -- about the masterpiece and about the artist. The original of this work hangs in Philadelphia at The Barnes Foundation. It is huge, and for me, dominates my attention in a room full of phenomenal artwork.
In my version I have used almost exclusively pigmented wax, with only the face in paper. It is dramatic! Although certainly large, the "Seated Riffian" somehow feels right at home in any room.
